One of the largest islets in Mauritius with over three miles of solitude on trails meandering through forests, lakes, ruins and to the sea. The island has no permanent resident, but gets a few visitors each day. The trails on the island are part of a government-built “Nature Walk’ that is well-maintained and easy to follow. There is a very nice picnic area pavilion on the island as well. There are ruins of former habitation in the center of the island along the main trail. Scattered about the island are depressions filled with seepage from the sea, although one has quite a bit of depth and is teeming with fish. The trails are not marked, but the island is small, so wander far and wide. You will find some priceless peace and quiet here.
You can also do activities like: Kayaking in the mangroves and hiking on the island, snorkeling and swim in the crystal water.
The mangrove that surrounds the island makes it a belt of protection; natural and shady canals criss-cross it, which means that you can explore it as close as possible. Due to the calm, shallow waters bordering the coast of St Antoine, the salinity is higher there, but as the roots of the red mangrove - which dominates here, filter the salt very effectively to be impermeable there, it flourishes; dense and lush!
The tranquility that reigns in the heart of the Ile d'Ambre mangrove creates an idyllic sanctuary atmosphere, on the fringes of the hustle and bustle of the world. It welcomes birds, shelters crabs and molluscs; serves as a nursery and nurseries for fish by providing them with food and protection. The roots of mangrove trees also play an important role in preventing erosion of the island and the seabed surrounding it during torrential rains.
Remember to bring masks and snorkels to take a closer look at the marine fauna whose healthy development it supports. Perhaps you will see young and playful sunfish there who will lead you into a joyful game of hide and seek...
